“Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.”
1 John 2:7 NASB ©

John writes of his affection for his readers. He is reminding his dearly loved friends not of a novel, new, ethical command but of an old commandment. If he is writing about the command to walk in the same manner as Christ (verse 6), then the old commandment was given by Jesus. If he is writing about the command to love one another (verses 5 and 10), then the old commandment goes all the way back to the Old Testament law and is reinforced by Jesus. Either way, the beloved had been given the command from the beginning of their relationship with Jesus.

Lord Jesus, remind me of all the commands I am to follow. I am thankful for Your wonderful Word, the Bible, and how it teaches me how to obey Your commands.
